This species is the largest and most robust seal species, with males between 2 and 2,2 meters in length and weighing between 190 and 280 kilograms, while females are between 1,2 and 1,8 meters long and weigh between 36 and 110 kilograms.
The male seals' fur is dark gray to brown and the belly is light, while females are typically light brown to gray, with a light throat and darker back and belly.
