The tiger grouper can be found in the warmer waters of the western Atlantic Ocean, where it lives on oral reefs and in rocky areas at depths of 3 to 112 meters (9.8 to 367.5 feet).
The fish elongated, robust and compressed body and a large mouth. The name comes from the tiger-like pattern on its body; its back is crossed by about 11 pale narrow lines that slope downward and forward.
