Smooth Trunkfish

Alternative names: Lactophrys triqueter

The Smooth Trunkfish is a species of boxfish that lives on the Caribbean reefs, in the Gulf of Mexico and in the western part of the Atlantic Ocean. It has a dark, triangular body covered in white spots and an area of pale honeycomb markings on the center.
The smooth trunkfish has an interesting hunting method. It uses its lips to expel a jet of water in order to spread the sandy seabed and find any buried invertebrate, such as molluscs, worms, sponges.
There are some regions around the world where the smooth trunkfish is caught for human consumption, but people must be careful as it produces a toxic substance.

The main regions where it has been spotted:

Roatan

Caribbean Sea

Cozumel

Mujeres Island

Bonaire
