Skates are cartilaginous fish in the family Rajidae. They number about 150 species, classified in 17 genra. They are bottom-dwelling animals found in most parts of the world, including near-Arctic waters. The common skate can reach over two meters in length. The animals are characterized by their flat bodies and wing-like pectoral fins.
