Alternative names: Polyodontidae
Paddlefish are basal Chondrostean ray-finned fish native to North America and China. They are known as "primitive fish" since they have evolved with few changes since the earliest fossil records of the Early Cretaceous. There are six known species of paddlefish, but only one - the American paddlefish - can still be seen today. The Chinese paddlefish has last been spotted in 2018 and is believed to be extinct.
