Mussel is a common term used for members of several families of bivalve mollusks. They have an elongated and asymmetrical shell composed of two valves that close when necessary. The largest organ is called a foot, which is used to pull the animal through the substrate. Mussels feed on plankton and other free-floating tiny sea creatures.
