The forkbeard lives in the Western Mediterranean, usually at depths from 100 to 650 meters. It commonly reaches a length of 25 centimeters, but some males can get to 65 centimeters.
Their bodies are dark brown or gray on the back, but ventrally the color becomes paler.
Forkbeards are nocturnal fish which spend their days hiding between rocks and their nights hunting small fish or invertebrates.
