Butterfly rays are species of ray in the family Gymnuridae. Their body is flattened and surrounded by a broad, butterfly-shaped disc formed by their pectoral fins.

These rays are found in warm oceans worldwide on soft mud or sandy substrates. They may occasionally enter estuaries and bays.

Benthic feeder. The rays consume bottom-living invertebrates and small fish.

They pose no danger to humans.

Often seen in Anchieta Island
