The bamboo coral is a deep-sea coral that supports other deep-sea life. Little is known about this type of coral, despite being found in waters throughout the world. They form large, single-species fields and are made up of calcium carbonate. Some coral can be long-lived; researchers discovered bamboo coral specimens as old as 4,000 years.
