Shaab Abu Nugar in northern Hurghada is famous for its variety of hard corals and ergs. The reef actually consists of multiple dive sites such as Abu Nugar, gotta Abu Nugar, and Shaab Iris. Abu Nugar means “father of the pools”, a reference to its underwater dunes.
Marine life includes superb yellow and purple gorgonians, brain coral, and horn coral. Eagle rays, broom tail wrasses, sea turtles, moray eels, stonefish, scorpionfish, barracudas, and parrotfish are some of the creatures you can frequently see here. There are also several cleaning stations where you can observe the animals.
While some areas may be unimpressive, others offer superb diving and healthy, flourishing corals. Torfa Abu Nugar in the north, for example, has a beautiful coral garden, while Erug Abu Nugar features exciting pinnacles.
The depth at Shaab Abu Nugar does not exceed 18 meters (59 feet), so the dive sites here are quite shallow and can be explored by divers of all levels. The currents are also very week and pose no issues.
