Pickles Reef is a large and shallow reef where both divers and snorkelers can observe corals. You may be wondering where the strange name comes from – it’s because of the cement-filled pickle barrels sunk here during the Civil War. They’re still here, but they’re covered with pillar corals and other invertebrates.
Depths range from 2meters/6 feet to 9 meters/30 feet. Despite its shallow depth that could attract a number of visitors, it is further out from Key Largo, so it’s not that frequented.
The area is busy with juvenile fish of all sorts and other animals such as spiny lobsters, conchs, and nudibranchs.
