Just a 10-minute boat ride from the shore, Mytilene/Mitilini is a wreck dive site you should definitely check if when in Halkidiki. The 40-meter-long German cargo ship sunk in 1961 due to a crash in the propeller following a severe storm. The day it sunk it carried barrels of wine and groceries. Today, divers can still see the bottles spread all over the ship.
The shipwreck is full of life, providing habitat to a number of sea creatures, including groupers, blackfish, crayfish, anemones, conger eels, octopuses, shellfish, as well as sponges and corals.
Mytilene rests in about 20 meters/66 feet of water and is recommended for experienced divers.
