MV Meppel lies on the sea floor at a depth of almost 25 meters, thus being accessible only to the more advanced divers. It is almost 38 meters long and it impresses by the fact that it is basically intact.
The ship sits outside Anguilla's reef system after having been sunk in 1990.
Divers visit this ship mostly because of its historic importance. Initially named "Hilda", MV Meppel took part in the "Dunkirk" operation during World War II, when Allied soldiers were evacuated after being surrounded by German troops.
The vessel has meanwhile turned into an artificial ecosystem that hosts numerous species of marine life, from corals to large schools of fish.
