MV Karwela was launched in 1957 as M/S Frisia II and she was transferred to Malta in 1986.
The wreck has a length of 50 meters and a width of 8.5 meters. The upper part of the deck stands at a depth of 30 meters while the lowest part of the ship is at 45 meters deep, thus being at the limit of recreational diving.
The ship stands in an upright position.
It was turned into an artificial reef in 2006, being especially destined to scuba divers. She had been used a tourist ferry until 2002 and was decommissioned.
She can be dived both from shore and by boat and it has several open swim throughs and passageways, which make it easily accessible.
Algae, sea firs, invertebrates and nudibranchs populate this dive site. There is a reef nearby which makes for an ideal safety stop.
