The Liberty dive site is a relatively new shipwreck in Cyprus, having been sunk on purpose on the initiative of the Cyprus Tourism Organization in 2009. It was salvaged from the scrapyard and cleaned to be made safe for divers as part of the island’s artificial reef program.

The Russian cargo ship has not yet been claimed by too much sea life, like other older and more popular wrecks, but it’s getting there. The ship is a small one, just 37 meters (121 feet) in length and 10 meters (33 feet) in width.

Liberty is located approximately one kilometer from the shore, in Protaras. The wreck sits in about 27 meters (89 feet) of water, its shallowest part being found at a depth of about 22 meters (72 feet). It has a few swim-throughs for the adventurous ones. Due to its depth, the spot is often used for Advanced Open Water training. It is not suitable for beginners and divers are required to own an Advanced Open Water (or the equivalent) certification.
