Dos Ojos is a flooded cave system in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico. It’s one of the top longest cave systems in the world and contains the deepest known cave passage in the region, measuring a depth of 118 meters/396 feet, located at The Pit Cenote.

This cave system is 6,000 years old, but exploration began in 1986. To this day, much of the caves have yet to be explored.

“Dos Ojos” means two eyes and the name refers to the two cenotes nearby which connect into a very large cavern shared between the two. Two different dives can be experienced at Dos Ojos; the first is Barbie Line and the second is Bat Cavern.

Your first dive will be Barbie Line, where you’ll find several astonishing columns formed thousands of years ago before the caves became flooded. Some of these columns are 8 meters/27 feet tall. Between Barbie Line and Bat Cavern, there are big tunnels, caverns, and open areas.

The Bat Cavern is the second circuit and it is a lot darker than Barbie Line. You’ll still find several places to surface, but you won’t see natural light. And as you may have guessed, you will see bats on the roof of the cave.

Diving in Dos Ojos is possible year-round and can be done by divers of all levels. The average water temperature is around 25° C/77° F. The maximum depth you’ll reach here is 10 meters/33 feet and underwater visibility is outstanding.
