The Pioneer is a Japanese WWII warship that sunk in 1944. Found at a depth of 54 meters/178 feet, the 65-meter-/214 foot-long ship is of the deepest wrecks around Malapascua Island. You will need technical diving training in order to dive the Pioneer.
The wreck sits upright on the seabed with most of its parts intact. The stern is a little broken on the starboard side, most likely due to an aerial attack. Penetration is possible but not advised unless you are truly experienced and well-equipped.
Some of the marine animals you can spot around the wreck include sharks, barracudas, groupers, and rays.
