Found between Timber Island and the Duck Islands in the shallows of Gull Shoal, the Banshee is a wooden propeller steamboat. She was on route from Port Stanley (Lake Erie) to Montreal with a cargo of 6,000 bushels of wheat, 250 barrels of flour and 300 kegs of butter. The Banshee ran into a terrible storm on August 21, 1861 and lost the use of her engine. She drifted into shallow water and was stranded. All of the crew except one, were saved.
