Akitsushima is a former Japanese seaplane tender. One of the seaplanes it recovered was the Kawanishi H8K1 Emily flying boat. It is believed that Emily is also the reason for the tender’s demise. An explosion caused by the flying boat's fuel tanks may have led to the sinkage of Emily. The flying boat was never found.

The ship is cut in two and the huge rip in the stern creates entry points for wreck divers to explore its insides. There, divers can see the machinery and gears of the ship.
