A.E. Vickery is a former three-masted wooden schooner measuring 41 meters/136 feet in length. The size of the schooner is quite impressive given its age.
The ship was built in 1861 and was launched under the name of J.B. Penfield. In February 1884, it was renamed and in August 1889, she sank after having struck a shoal while entering the American Narrows.
The wreck now lies on a ledge adjacent to Rock Island Shoal at a maximum depth of about 35 meters/115 feet. The port bow of the wreck can be found at just 18 meters/60 feet. It is possible to see some interesting things still on the ship such as the stove on the stern and the rudder.
The A E Vickery can be explored by divers of all levels within their certification limits. But beware of the current, as it can get strong.
