First Cathedral is probably Lanai Island’s most popular dive site. Located southeast of Hulopoe Bay, the site features a huge cavern, or lava tube, made up of multiple tunnels, ridges, and passageways. With part of the roof collapsed and exposed to natural light, the rays create a spotlight effect that can help you shoot some amazing underwater photographs.

The site has a maximum depth of 50 feet/15 meters and the top of the cavern can be reached at 25 feet/8 meters. Visibility is very good, exceeding 40 feet/12 meters.

The water temperature ranges between 21°/24° C (70°/75° F) from November to April and 24°/27° C (75°/80° F) from May to October.

Marine life consists of animals like sharks, sea turtles, lobsters, octopuses, and an array of fish like raccoon butterflyfish and bandit angelfish, Moorish idols.

Note: Some areas of the cavern may not be diveable when the surf is strong.
