garibaldi

Noms alternatifs : Catalina goldfish, marine goldfish, Garibaldi damselfish, Hypsypops rubicundus

The Garibaldi is a bright orange fish in the damselfish family. Its common name comes from the renowned political figure Giuseppe Garibaldi, whose followers often wore scarlet or red shirts.

The species is native to the north-eastern subtropical parts of the Pacific and it is found over rocky reefs in waters up to 30 meters (100 feet) deep.

The male Garibaldi damselfish are known for being aggressive when guarding nest sites. They have been known to bite divers in order to drive them away from the nest.
