Black Forest is one of the most stunning dive sites off Balicasag Island, The Philippines. The spot features a slope filled with coral heads. Much to everyone’s surprise, there are few black corals present on the spot, at least not in the shallower parts. Black corals can, however, be encountered at depths of more than 30 meters/100 feet. If you’re wondering what earned this spot the name of “Black Forest”, it’s the black crinoids, also known as sea lilies, feather stars, or comatulids. These spiky creatures start off as free-swimming animals, but at one point in their lives attach themselves to corals and rocks.
The marine life at Black Forest also includes groupers, Napoleon wrasses, sea turtles, blue-fin trevallies, barracudas, jacks, garden eels, mackerels, scorpionfish, squirrelfish, damselfish, anemone fish, triggerfish, nudibranchs, and others. It truly is an amazing dive site teeming with life of all sorts – a photographer’s haven!
The best time to dive here is from June to October. With a depth of 8 to 40 meters/26 to 131 feet, Black Forest is suitable for divers of all levels within the limit of their certification. The visibility is excellent, often in excess of 15 meters/49 feet.
