This fish prefers the tropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian and western Pacific Oceans, near coral reefs. Their laterally compressed bodies have bright colours and have characteristically strong preopercle spines.
Their length varies from species to species, ranging from 15 centimeters to 60 centimeters. The larger species usually tend to approach divers.
