The island grouper is a large species of fish, which grows to a maximum length of 80 centimeters. Its body has a brownish or dark grey colour with irregular pale spots and its maxillary streak is prominent.
When stressed, the island grouper can reverse its body colour and pattern.
This type of grouper is endemic to the Macaronesian Islands, namely the Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands and Cape Verde. Howeever, it has recently been spotted in the Mediterranean.
It is currently classified as endangered in The IUCN Red List of Endangered Species, with the most probable cause being overexploitation.
