The SS Yongala is the largest wreck in the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which has earned its reputation as one of the best dive sites in Australia. In fact, it is considered one of the best wreck dives in the world.

The ship sank in 1911 during a cyclone. All 122 people aboard it lost their lives. The wreck was first dived in 1958 and luckily, it has remained largely untouched. Its top is located at 15 meters/50 feet and its deepest part lies on the sea bottom at 33 meters/108 feet.

Yongala has become an established artificial wreck, providing a habitat for a range of marine life. Some of the creatures you can see here include manta rays, eagle rays, trevallies, groupers, barracudas, sea turtles, and multiple species of sharks such as bull and tiger sharks.
