The St George Wreck is one of the most popular dive sites in Bayahibe, Dominican Republic. It consists of a former cargo ship built in 1962 and used to transport cereal between Norway and the Americas. It was abandoned after about 20 years of use. In 1999, it was sunk on purpose off Viva Dominicus Beach to create an artificial reef.
The 73-meter-/240-foot-long wreck lies on the sea bottom at a depth of about 44 meters/144 feet, with its stern at 30 meters/100 feet and top at 15 meters/50 feet, making it suitable for advanced divers. Wreck divers can penetrate the ship.
St George Wreck is home to many schooling fish, and you’re guaranteed to see some barracudas.
The diving season runs from June to September, which is when you’ll find the best conditions. The water temperature, nonetheless, remains warm throughout the year. Visibility exceeds 20 meters/66 feet.
