The San Francisco Maru was built in 1919 as a merchant vessel, destined for the transport of coal, bauxite and other minerals. The ship sank in 1944 after receiving several hits during Operation Hailstone.
The 116 meter-(385 feet-) long San Francisco Maru sits on a sandy bottom at a dept of 60 meters (196 feet), which means only technical divers are able to get close to it.
On the main deck, divers can see the cargo containing well-preserved type 95 Ha-Go tanks and a truck. War materials such as mines, bombs, torpedoes, and ammunition can be seen in the holds. The ship is a haven for history buffs.
The water temperatures is between 27 and 30 degrees Centigrade (80-86 degrees Fahrenheit) and the visibility is outstanding - around 30 meters (98 feet).
