Punta Sur has a depth ranging from 15 to 27 meters and the site's topography, in combination with its medium current, recommend it only for the experienced and advanced diver.
The southern portion of this dive spot has an impressive chamber called The Cathedral, while the north part has a cave formation called Devil's Throat, which is especially challenging and requires great buoyancy skills and air consumption.
Divers can observe here many sponges, soft and hard corals, goupers, snappers, grunts, jacks, moray eels, trumpetfish, damselfish, barracudas, turtles, reef sharks, nurse sharks.
Nevertheless, this is an extremely popular dive spot, and this has taken its toll on the abundance of marine life.
The water temperature in this dive spot is typical for Cozumel, ranging from 23 to 27 degrees Centigrade.
Punta Sur is recognized as one of the best dive sites in Cozumel. It’s located on the southern end of the island and features a wall that goes down to a depth of about 50 meters/165 feet. There are also many different caves ("The Cathedral" is the most impressive) that divers can enter and explore. Then there’s also an area with coral reefs and an abundance of fish.
The dives generally take place between 15 to 27 meters/50-88 feet, but there are some swim-throughs found at depths below 30 meters/100 feet.
Because of the depth, tight spaces, and unpredictability of the currents, the Punta Sur area should only be attempted by experienced, advanced divers. Diving is possible year-round, but the peak season runs from December to April.
