The Hydro Atlantic is considered one of the most popular wreck dive sites in the United States. The ship was built in 1905 and sank in 1987 when its hull gave out while it was being towed to a salvage yard in Texas.
The wreck rests upright in 52 meters (172 feet) or water with still many pieces of equipment on its deck. Being in the water for so long, the structure has been affected by the currents and saltwater erosion and some of the walls have collapsed. Still, penetration is possible, with the most popular spot being the engine room.
Now an artificial reef, the Hydro Atlantic is covered in corals and sponges, and teeming with marine life of all sorts. Tropical fish, amberjacks, barracudas, and other pelagic fish hide among the crevices of the wreck. Bull sharks may sometimes be spotted.
The Hydro Atlantic dive site is suitable for technical divers and those that want to penetrate the ship should be certified cave divers. There is also a strong current in the area.
