The Douglas DC3, or C47, was a transporter for a Turkish paratrooper regiment during WWII. But there is no dramatic story behind its demise. The plane was sunk on purpose in 2009 to create an artificial reef for scuba divers.
The 20-meter (66-feet) long aircraft sits upright at a depth of 26 meters (85 feet) on a sandy bottom, with its undercarriage deployed. Scuba divers can explore its cockpit, where you can still see the flight controls.
The plane provides shelter for a variety of marine wildlife. Shrimp gobies live in the sand near the plane and barracudas drift by in search of food. Look out for the Mediterranean damselfish that like to hide in the engines.
The underwater visibility is often poor. If you can, come in the morning, when visibility is better than in the afternoon. The peak diving season runs from June to September, but the conditions are good from April all through October.
