The Cathedral is one of the most popular dive sites in Lanzarote and a definite must for those visiting the island. It got its name because of the large cavern that resembles a cathedral complete with an “altar” near its end.
The entrance to the cavern measures about 15 meters in height and 20 meters in width. Its upper part is filled with soft coral and before entering the cave, you can also spot a branch of the rare black coral.
The spot is home to a multitude of marine life, including stingrays, angel sharks, groupers, gardener eels, spiderfish, lizardfish, wide-eyed flounders, tuna, sand crabs, and others.
West of the Cathedral, below the reef wall, there’s also a small fishing boat wreck.
The Cathedral can be dived by Open Water divers and up. Access is done by shore and the dive goes down to a maximum of 30 meters. Water temperature varies between 17° and 24° C (62-75° F) depending on the season.
