Banana Reef is a dive site located in the North Male Atoll. This was actually the first site discovered in the Maldives and was given this name because – you guessed it - it is shaped like a banana. The reef features an interesting pinnacle, dramatic cliffs, overhangs, and even caves. It is a protected area, allowing marine life of all sorts to thrive. Depth ranges from 5 to 30 meters.

This spot offers some amazing landscapes, much to underwater photographers’ delight. The reef is filled with vividly colored corals – from pink and red to green and lilac – as well as shrubs and other flora of all shapes, sizes, and textures.

Banana Reef is home to numerous marine animals like sharks, manta rays, barracudas, jacks, groupers, Napoleon wrasses, stingrays, moray eels, giant clams, blue-striped snappers, bannerfish, squirrelfish, soldierfish, sweetlips, and other tropical fish.

Diving in the North Male Atoll varies dramatically throughout the year. The official diving season runs from December to late May. This is when you can find the calmest sea conditions. From late May to July, the area is hit by the southwest monsoon and diving is not always possible.
