The Barracuda Point Dive Site is located in the Small Atoll area which is separated from the large Padaido Atoll. The original name of this atoll from the Padaido people is Urbepyar (Urb from Urep which means small sand, pyar means drifting, so it means floating sand from the ancestors). In the past, the sand in this area was very high but the longer it was getting shallower because it had been exposed to the currents of the waves.
Since the 90s, this location has become a dive site and through surveys it is most often characterized by the number of schooling barracudas found, which is the reason why it is called the Barracuda Point dive site. Located on the southern side of the island of Wundi, Barracuda Point features a landscaped wall along its path and slopes at shallow depths.
Barracuda Point intersects with Dive Site Entrance Point. Barracuda Point points south and Entrance Point points north. Many biota can be found from the path to the schooling barracuda which is located at the south end of the trail such as batfish, rainbowfish, stonefish, and sharks that can be found up to 3 species and if you are lucky you can also see hammerhead sharks which are usually found at a depth of 25-30m.
So at this dive site it is recommended to maintain air capacity to reach the end of the schooling barracuda track in the south, one of which can be done by diving at a depth that is not too deep along the path. The current condition also needs to be confirmed with the local divemaster because the current is sometimes found to be quite strong, so it is also recommended that the diver lean against the side of the wall to avoid the current. Divers can also wait in a kneeling position to avoid being carried away from the current while waiting for the arrival of the schooling barracuda. In general, barracudas are quite curious when they see bubbles from divers, so they often approach divers, but divers are advised not to chase the schooling barracuda so as not to run away. If the water is flowing, usually barracuda can be found rising near the surface of the water.
