The longspine squirrelfish is a big-eyed fish, a characteristic of all squirrelfish. The "longspine" in its common name comes from its anal fin, which has an elongated third spine.

The species is also recognizable by its silvery red color with orange-gold stripes. You'll see the fish on rocky or coral reefs, where they are active during the night.

Longspine squirrelfish are distributed along the southeastern coast of the U.S. and further down to Northern South America and Brazil. You may also spot them around Bermuda and the West Indies.
