The blue spotted grouper is the most widely distributed of the groupers and it occurs from the Red Sea to South Africa and east to French Polynesia and the Pitcairn group, including northern Australia, Lord Howe Island, and Japan. It was also recently introduced to the Hawaiian Islands.
This grouper is a medium-sized fish that can reach up to 60 centimeters in length and prefers the exposed fronts of reefs, with depths of up to 40 meters.
This type of fish has a dark brown colour with hundreds of small iridescent blue spots with dark edges. Larger individuals can also diplay four to six lighter vertical bars on the back half of their bodies.
The blue spotted grouper is extremely aggressive and can eat its tank mates while in captivity.
