Usgs Duane

The former U.S. Coast Guard cutter Duane was decommissioned in 1985 and donated to the Keys Association of Dive Operators to use as an artificial reef. The ship was sunk in 1987 at Molasses Reef.

The wreck sits upright on the seabed at depths of 33 to 40 meters/110-130 feet and is covered in colorful corals. Its crow’s nest is one of the most photographed parts of any dive site in Key Largo thanks to the abundance of fish that swim by it.

Some of the marine animals you can expect to see around the wreck include great barracudas, yellowtail snappers, Atlantic spadefish, goliath grouper, reef shark, nurse shark, and even bull shark.

Due to its depth and strong currents, the USGS Duane is recommended for advanced divers. Certified wreck divers can penetrate the wreck.
