Sleeping Sharks Cave is a renowned shark hotspot in Isla Mujeres, discovered in the late ‘60s by a local fisherman. The dive site got its name because of its inhabitants which can be found resting on the bottom of the sea. This is due to the water bubbles that contain a higher content of oxygen and low salt levels, conditions which scientists believe allow the sharks to breathe without being in motion.
The dive site has a maximum depth of about 20 meters (65 feet), moderate current, and a visibility of 10 - 30 meters (33 - 98 feet). The average annual water temperature is 27° C/80° F.
Diving at Sleeping Sharks Cave is available year-round, but you may want to avoid the hurricane season (May through November). The dive site is not considered suitable for novice divers.
The most common species of sharks you can expect to encounter here are nurse sharks, but black-tip, bull, and grey sharks can also be spotted. Other sightings include manta rays, amberjacks, and sea turtles.
