The RMS Rhone is a spectacular wreck found off Salt Island in the British Virgin Islands. The 90-meter/310-foot twin-masted steamer was built in 1865 and sank during a hurricane in 1867.
In 1977, the wreck gained popularity after appearing in the adventure film The Deep, starring Nick Nolte and Jacqueline Bisset.
At 20 to25 meters/65 to 80 feet of water lies the bow, which is the deepest and most intact part of the ship. From here, certified wreck divers can get inside the ship to see the mast and crow’s nest that is still attached to the wreck.
The stern, which is the shallowest part of the ship, can be seen by both divers and snorkelers. Here you can see the ship’s rudder and propeller.
Marine life includes lots of sea turtles, stingrays, yellowtail snappers, jacks, grunts, angelfish, lobsters, eels, basket starfish, and nudibranchs.
The RMS Rhone is a massive wreck that deserves more than one dive, just so you can see it in entirety. Night dives are available.
