Punta Tunich has a depth ranging from 15 to 37 meters. Its strong currents deem it suitable only for advanced and skilled divers, as there is a chance of divers being swept away in the open sea.
The beginning of the dive has an area with white sand, and afterwards comes a drop off, while the northern section of the dive site is slightly deeper than the southern one.
Punta Tunich has numerous soft and hard corals, gorgonians, sponges, sea fans, anemones and brain corals. Between them live fish typical of Cozumel, such as seahorses, grunts, snappers, groupers, moray eels, filefish as well as the splendid toadfish, which is endemic to this part of the world.
The water temperature is the usual for Cozumel, ranging from 23 degrees Centigrade to 27 degrees, depending on the season.
Punta Tunich is a beautiful wall dive known for its strong currents. The site features a wall and a shallow part. Dive the northern tip of the reef only if you are an experienced diver. The best time to dive that part is when the current is flowing from south to north. The slope at the northern point features numerous caves and crevices where you can observe wildlife.
Depth ranges from 15 to 30 meters/50 to 100 feet.
Marine life includes species like nurse sharks, eagle rays, barracudas, toadfish, parrotfish, French grunts, squirrelfish, angelfish, seahorses, among others. There’s also an abundance of barrel and rope sponges.
Diving in Cozumel is possible throughout the year, with water temperatures ranging from 24° C/75° F to 30° C/86° F. You can find good places to dive even during the hurricane season (June to October/November).
