The Museo Subacuático de Arte (MUSA) is an innovative project located just off the coast of Isla Mujeres. This underwater museum was established in 2009 and was one of the few of its kind at the time. It features a series of sculptures by renowned artist Jason Taylor de Caires and several Mexican artists. The museum has more than 500 sculptures portraying local men and women, as well as children.
The sculptures are made of pH-neutral marine concrete and all have been cleaned before installation to ensure they are not contaminated with any chemicals. The statues are filled with holes and were implanted with coral from nearby damaged reefs to allow coral to regrow and attract marine wildlife to this area.
Some of the most popular sculptures include the Volkswagen Beetle - a full-sized cement replica of the car, and The Silent Evolution – a set of sculptures depicting examples of local occupations, ages, and expressions.
Divers of all levels can dive at MUSA. The sculptures are located in 3 to 8 meters/10-26 feet of water. Snorkelers can get a good look at the statues too. Diving is possible year-round. the average water temperature is a balmy 28° C/82° F and the average visibility is 18 meters/60 feet.
