Iro Maru is one of the most dived wrecks in Palau. The 143-meter/ 471-foot long Japanese freighter was sunk in 1944 and is now covered with soft corals and other marine invertebrates. The shipwreck lies on the seabed at about 40 meters/130 feet in an upright position. Parts of the wreck are still intact, including the gun turrets, the three masts, and the main deck.
Iro Maru is penetrable, but only experienced divers should venture inside. Inside, divers can see the crew quarters, with items such as gas masks still present. The engine room where a giant boiler is located can also be penetrated.
The bow has a large gun covered with black coral and the deck is covered with remains of claims.
Best dived on Nitrox so that you get more time to enjoy the wreck. You can visit any time of the year, but June and July are known to be rainy. The water temperature is about 26°-27° C/79°-81° F year-round.
