Barco C-56, or C-56 Juan Escutia, is the wreck of an old minesweeper built for the United States Navy during World War II. In 1962, the warship was sold to the Mexican Navy who converted it to an oceanographic research vessel. The boat was ultimately sunk on purpose in 2000 to create an artificial reef.
The wreck lies just off Puerto Morelos, in the Yucatán Peninsula, and is now almost completely covered in coral and other marine life. It is home to a multitude of species of animals such as sea turtles, eagle rays, reef sharks, snappers, groupers, barracudas, lobsters, and green moray eels.
Barco C-56 can be found at a depth of about 25 meters/80 feet and is suitable for advanced divers.
