The Aliwal Shoal is a great dive site for spotting various species of sharks all year round. The site is located in the Mission Blue Hope Spot, a marine protected area of South Africa. The rocky reef lies 5 km from the coast of KwaZulu-Natal and was named so after a three-masted vessel called Aliwal that nearly sunk in the area in 1849.
The reef is home to numerous tropical and subtropical fish as well as hard and soft corals.
The shallow depth of no more than 18 meters/60 feet makes it suitable for all divers.
