The silky shark inhabits the warm tropical waters around the world. The name "silky shark" was given thanks to the smooth texture of its skin compered to other sharks.
The silky shark is not generally dangerous to divers but if approached directly they can become dangerous.
In 1989 more than 900,000 individuals were killed as bycatch in the southern and central Pacific tuna longline fishery and today the rate of reproduction for this shark has significantly declined.
