The French grunt is a species of grunt native to the western Atlantic Ocean. It is recognized by its almond-shaped, compressed body, which ends in a blunt snout.

The fish is found at depths between 1 and 60 meters, usually in schools. It lives over rocky areas and coral reefs, as well as sea grass beds.
