The black grouper is a grouper from the subfamily Epinephelinae that is found in the western Atlantic Ocean. It is believed to be the largest species of the Mycteroperca genus found in the Atlantic, attaining a maximum length of 150 centimeters (59 in).

The fish has an oblong body and rounded margins on both the dorsal and anal fins. Its body is mostly olive grey with dark blotches and brassy spots over the head and flanks.

Black groupers are found over rocky bottoms and coral reefs at depths reaching 30 meters (100 feet). They are usually solitary but can form seasonal feeding aggregations.
