Mama Vina

Site de plongée à
Improve

Mama Vina is a shrimp boat that was intentionally sunk in 1995 so as to create an artificial reef that would become an attraction for divers.

Divers can explore Mama Vina at depths between 18 and 30 meters and, due to the strong currents encountered here, only the advanced and experienced divers are advised to explore it.

The transformation of Mama Vina into an artificial reef has been very successful, as it attracts numerous residents, such as barracudas, lobsters, moray eels, stingrays, spotted eagle rays.

Mama Viña is a 35-minute boat ride from Playa del Carmen and consists of the wreck of an old shrimping boat. The vessel was sunk on purpose in 1995 to create an artificial reef.

The wreck lies almost intact in 16 to 28 meters/52-92 feet of water and can be explored from the inside too. Because of its depth and the strong currents in the area, it is suitable for advanced divers. Very good visibility (approximately 25 meters/82 feet).

The hull of Mama Viña is covered with coral and sea fans and there’s plenty of fish circling the boat. Southern stingrays, spotted eagle rays, and garden eels are common encounters.

Recommended on Nitrox so you can enjoy the entirety of the wreck.
