Barracuda Lake is among the truly unique dives of the world. This amazing dive site located off the island of Coron, Philippines, offers divers the chance to dive two worlds. The water changes from freshwater to saltwater at a depth of only 4 meters (13 feet), creating what looks like a grey horizontal line.
The water temperature at the top of the Barracuda Lake is about 28° C (82° F), but as you descend to about 14 meters (46 feet), there’s a huge thermocline and heliocline and the water temperature reaches 38° C (100° F)!
At a depth of about 30 meters (98 feet), there’s also a narrow cave that can be penetrated but only by trained divers.
The maximum depth of Barracuda Lake dive site is 35 meters (115 feet), where the water changes from clear to murky because of the silt and tannic acid from leaves that fell into the lake. The silty sand on the bottom of the lake is one of the highlights of the dive, as divers often play around in the sand.
There is not much to see in terms of marine life – only some rabbitfish, catfish, shrimp, snappers, batfish, pufferfish, and shells, but that’s not why divers come here, anyway. You come here for the unique experience of seeing a surreal landscape and diving into two types of waters and two different temperatures at the same dive site.
Barracuda Lake can be dived year-round.
