The weedy seadragon is a marine fish related to the seahorse. Their name comes from the leave-like appendages that resemble kelp. These appendages provide camouflage and feature spines for protection.

Adult seadragons have a reddish color with yellow and purple markings. Males are darker than females.

The weedy seadragon is endemic to Australian temperate marine waters where it inhabits coastal waters down to at least 50 meters (160 feet) deep.
